In designing Tarjei, I chose to move away from realism to focus on the metaphysical and psychological dimensions, aiming to understand the characters' emotional journeys. I saw soil as a representation of Earth as both the origin and conclusion of life, embodying each individual's path. To symbolize this, I gave each character a box of soil, representing their life. This box became a focal point for how they belong, interact, neglect, and accept one another. It highlighted the loneliness of individuals while acknowledging our inevitable need for belonging.
The ultimate goal of my design was to engage the audience in contemplating the existential question, "What are we doing here on earth?", inviting the audience to reflect on the deeper meanings of life through the characters' journeys.
